Heat Wave causes surge in prices for nuclear and coal generated electricity.
Integration of renewables is imperative to secure energy supplies

Heat waves clearly display the shortcomings of conventional power plants: the price for electricity from conventional power plants had risen 600% in the matter of a few days. The German Renewable Energy Federation points out that up to 30.2 to 54 cents per kilowatt hour had to be spent for electricity from conventional sources on hot days. That corresponds to roughly 3 to 5 times the price of renewable energy, which costs roughly 11 cents per kilowatt hour in Germany. Another trend seems to be offsetting the goal of increased exploitation of renewable energy in the whole of Europe: the rising popularity of air conditioning systems and fans, provoked by irresponsible glass architecture and the lack of proper heat barriers in both modern and older buildings. Ecological-functional quality is the only solution to such a problem.
