African water scheme success
Thursday 19 January 2006
A collaboration project designed to create
sustainable access to clean water and sanitation in Africa is achieving
positive results, it was revealed this week. The progress of Partners for
Water and Sanitation (PAWS) was detailed at its second annual forum, where
it was established that the group was delivering measurable results on the
ground.
"The partnership has grown over the last year with continued support being
provided in South Africa and exciting new projects beginning in Nigeria and
Uganda. We have also identified possible projects in Ethiopia and Lesotho
and all of our work is supporting existing initiatives by government, NGO's
and aid agencies,” said Ashley Roe, chair of PAWS.
Patners in the group include NGOS such as Tearfund and WaterAid, along with
engineering companies, law firms, government departments and water
companies.
"PAWS is now maturing into an effective partnership which is starting to
fulfil its considerable potential in delivering real help to people in
Africa. As the partnership has members from three sectors - government,
private enterprise and civil society - this enables us to draw from the
widest possible range of expertise, to respond to the challenge and to help
local African partners develop capacity and build truly sustainable
solutions,” added Environment Minister Elliot Morley.
