Alcoa Inc. said it will donate $8.6 million to create the Alcoa Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Program.

The program will pay for global study of conservation and sustainability research by 30 academic and 60 nongovernment organization fellows during the next six years.

The research then will be given away to all companies and nongovernment organizations around the world to help spur sustainable development, Alcoa said.

"As a company, we are committed to sustainable development," said Alain Belda, Alcoa chairman and CEO. "The practice of sustainability is part of our inner fiber and touches everything we do. In turn, we want to make the Alcoa Foundationīs Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Program the most prestigious program for environmental leaders worldwide."
