Antarctic climate change visit online

Tuesday 10 January 2006

antarcticA 10-day expedition to the Antarctic by Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Howard Dalton designed to investigate the effects of climate change is being followed online via a live blog.

During the trip, which has been documented since Monday (Jan 9th) on the Defra website, Prof. Dalton will look at evidence of global warming in the region, along with the work of the British Antarctic Survey and sustainable practice of local operations.

Issues such as the stability of the ice sheets, effects on wildlife and the latest research into ice cores will be on Prof. Dalton’s agenda.

"As Chief Scientific Adviser in the government department responsible for tackling climate change and sustainability, I want to see for myself the impact that we are all having on this most isolated place on earth,” he commented. "But is seems that I'm not the only one - almost everyone I've met recently has said that they'd like to come too. Sadly I can't take everyone to Antarctica, but I bring Antarctica to everyone, through the Internet."
