Elephants Kill Bangladeshi Villager, Attacks Rise
BANGLADESH: January 18, 2006

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh - A herd of wild elephants crushed a Bangladeshi villager to death, the eighth such killing over the past month in the southeast of the country, an official said on Tuesday.

Another man was injured in the clash in forests near Cox's Bazaar town, 400 km (250 miles) from Dhaka, where officials say a dwindling natural habitat is forcing elephants to overrun villages.

Two elephants have died, at least 15 people have been injured and dozens of homes havebeen destroyed in battles over the past month, a forest official said.

Bangladesh, one of the world's most densely populated nations, has a forest cover of 17.5 percent.
