Hybrid vehicle sales are forecasted to more than triple during the next seven years, but will remain a small portion of overall purchases, J.D. Power and Associates reports.

Hybrid sales will grow from about 212,000 vehicles last year to 780,000 vehicles in 2012, the Westlake Village, Calif.-based J.D. Power said.

Hybrids accounted for about 1.3 percent of all light-vehicle sales in 2005, and that number will increase to 4.2 percent in 2012, the company said.
