Maine´s e-waste recycling law goes into effect

Jan. 19 --

Maine´s electronic recycling law took effect Jan. 18, requiring electronics manufacturers to pay for the recycling of residential computer monitors and television sets.

Manufacturers, municipalities and consumers share the responsibility for recycling old electronics in the state. Municipalities are responsible for collecting obsolete computer monitors and TV sets through ongoing collection programs, one-day events or contracting with a company to provide a collection system and delivering the material to in-state consolidation facilities.

From there, electronics manufacturers are responsible for the handling and recycling costs of their branded computer monitors and TVs. Manufacturers will share the cost of orphaned products, or those materials whose manufacturer is no longer in business.

Beginning July 20, the state will ban the disposal of TVs and monitors.
