New York Gov. George Pataki wants to increase funding for the stateīs Environmental Protection Fund by $30 million, or 20 percent, in the upcoming fiscal year.

If the state Legislature approves the Republican governorīs proposal, which is included in his 2006-2007 Executive Budget, total funding for the Environmental Protection Fund would reach $180 million.

"In the past 11 years, New York State has made unprecedented investments to protect and enhance our environment, and this year I will be proposing a record level of funding for the EPF, the highest in state history, to ensure this important effort continues," Pataki said Jan. 9.

The Environmental Protection Fund finances efforts to preserve open space, encourage waterfront revitalization, reduce pollution, and fund municipal recycling programs.
