NGO warns against nuclear future
Friday 20 January 2006
Environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth
has again urged the government to reject adopting a new nuclear energy
programme, in the run-up to next week’s public consultation of the UK energy
policy.
The consultation, beginning Monday, will assess the UK’s energy demands,
along with its work in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting climate
change targets. It will specifically debate the possibility of developing a
new nuclear generation.
"UK energy policy is at a crossroads. We can tackle climate change and meet
our energy needs by cutting energy waste, harnessing the power of renewables
and using fossil fuels more efficiently,” commented Tony Juniper, FoE
Executive Director. “The Government must set us on the path to a clean, safe
and sustainable future and turn its back for once and for all on the failed,
dangerous and expensive experiment of nuclear power."
