New York discovers need for more grid, generation

New York City needs 6,000-7,000 mw of new generation -- the equivalent of three Hoover Dams -- to meet demand in 20 years, business groups say.

And it’s time policy makers did something about it, they added.

Robust and reliable energy is essential to the city’s economic well-being, the energy committee of the New York Building Congress reveals in a report.

The group called for more urgent attention from the public and private sectors to the need for new generation, grid, demand-side management, energy efficiency, DG, peak load management and high-performance building design.

Lawmakers need to place a "higher priority" on re-enacting Article X, the plant-siting law that ran out in 2002.

The law streamlined permitting and boosted generation.

But the pipeline of projects it opened up needs priming.

The report was co-sponsored by the Assn of for a Better New York, Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, Natural Resources Defense Council, Partnership for New York City and the Real Estate Board of New York.
