One-third of U.S. company’s locations now consume renewable energies

DALLAS, Texas, US, January 23, 2006 (Refocus Weekly)

A Texas-based global company will increase its consumption of green power to 40 million kilowatt-hours per year.

FedEx Kinko’s says its latest purchase of renewables for 100 locations in the U.S. will increase its total commitment to green power by 67.5%. It recently agreed to purchase 10.8 million kWh of Green-e certified renewable energy certificates for 88 of its locations in Southern California, and this new purchase will provide 50% of the annual electricity consumption for those centres.

“By increasing our green power use, FedEx Kinko's is helping to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted into the environment,” says vice president John Gomez. “Renewable energy purchases reduce our environmental footprint while helping to develop domestic energy sources that foster energy independence and economic development in the communities we service.”

FedEx Kinko’s expanded its purchases of green power throughout the U.S., including ten sites in Seattle, ten in Wisconsin, seven in Tennessee and one in California. Renewables now provide the equivalent to 14% of the company’s total annual U.S. electricity. More than 400 of the company's retail outlets in the U.S. now purchase green power or RECs.

As a result of the new purchases, FedEx Kinko's expects to displace the emission of 26,000 tons of CO2 each year, equivalent to the power used by 3,900 homes in one year.

Last year, FedEx Express unveiled the largest corporate solar PV system in California at its hub at Oakland International Airport. That installation garnered the ‘2005 Green Power Leadership Award’ from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy for green power purchasing.

In 2004, FedEx Express started buying delivery trucks that will decrease particulate emissions by 96% and, in 2003, it adopted a procurement policy which requires vendors to supply environmentally-superior products.

FedEx Kinko's claims to be the world's largest provider of document solutions through a global network of 1,500 locations with printing and delivery services. The mother company, FedEx, has annual revenues of US$31 billion.
