‘Microrenewables’ bill praised
Tuesday 21 March 2006
New legislation aimed at combatting climate change
and fuel poverty through the development of ‘microrenewable’ technology has
passed the report stage in the House of Commons, winning praise from
environmental group Friends of the Earth Scotland.
The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill, introduced by Mark
Lazarowicz MP, will receive its Third Reading around May. The bill had been
backed by FoE Scotland over the last few months, who urged cross-party
support for the measures.
"Today could finally be the start of something good for the environment. All
being well this Bill should now become law. When it does, this legislation
could really make a difference in the battle against climate change,”
commented Friends of the Earth Scotland's Chief Executive, Duncan McLaren.
"Mark Lazarowicz should be commended for his hard work in getting this Bill
through. Friends of the Earth has been supporting Mark's Bill as it would
help lead to a reduction in climate emissions, reduce fuel poverty, and
promote microrenewables and renewable heat. It is just a shame that the
Government couldn't find the time to introduce similar measures themselves."
