Argentina's lower house approves biofuel blendstocks bill
Buenos Aires (Platts)--23Mar2006
Argentina's lower house of Congress late Wednesday approved a
government-backed bill for incorporating crop-derived ethanol and biofuels as
blendstocks in diesel and gasoline to cut carbon dioxide emissions, a
congressional spokesman said Thursday.
The bill proposes requiring crop-derived biodiesel and ethanol to
comprise at least 5% of diesel and gasoline by January 1, 2010, in an effort
cut use of the fuel additive MTBE on grounds that it poses health and
environmental risks.
The bill also calls for providing incentives for companies to develop
biofuels. A modified bill approved by the Senate, the bill must return to the
upper house for final approval with or without the changes before it becomes
law.
