Arizona, New Mexico launch joint global warming initiative

Portland, Maine (Platts)--1Mar2006
The governors of Arizona and New Mexico Tuesday launched a Southwest
Climate Change initiative that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the
two states.

The move could affect generators in the states, which are one of
the top contributors to GHG emissions.

Under the effort, Arizona and New Mexico will collaborate on climate
change-related actions, including steps to boost renewable energy and energy
conservation, according to Democratic Governors Janet Napolitano of Arizona
and Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

The states also will work together to promote climate-change mitigation
efforts and develop consistent approaches to measure, forecast and report
greenhouse gas emissions.

Each governor created stakeholder-based climate change advisory groups in
2005. The groups are developing recommendations for reducing GHG emissions in
their states. The Arizona group is scheduled to make its recommendations by
the end of June and the New Mexico panel will report by December. New Mexico
was the first state to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, a GHG trading
program.
