BEIJING, Mar 29, 2006 -- SinoCast
A mid and long-term strategy for China's nuclear power generation development during the period of 2005 to 2020 has won approval from the State Council, the nation's cabinet. Over the past few years, China has been plagued with power shortages and it has turned to a multi-energy strategy in its power generating sector. Currently, power generated by coal accounts for 74% of the total power; that by hydropower 24%, and that by nuclear power only 1.6%. A total investment of more than 500 billion is expected to be put into the nation's nuclear power generating sector by 2020. And its nuclear power generating capacity will be driven up more than 30 million kilowatts, or over 300%, to 40 million kilowatts during the following 15 years from the current 8.7 million kilowatts. And yearly the nation needs to install two nuclear power generating sets of 1 million kilowatts each at least. |
