Connecticut Governor presses Bodman on high fuel prices

Singapore (Platts)--21Mar2006

Connecticut Governor M Jodi Rell sent a letter to US Department of Energy
Secretary Samuel Bodman Monday asking him to explain "an alarming increase in
the retail price of gasoline for no readily apparent reason."

"Over just the past four weeks in my state, the cost of a gallon of
gasoline has spiked by 20 to 25 cents," she wrote in the letter posted on her
office's website.

"Most disturbing, however, is the fact that we have seen these price
hikes in the absence of any substantive jump in the price of crude oil or a
natural disaster," she wrote.

"All the while, oil companies are reporting profits that can only be
described as obscene. With the nation's travel season almost here, it is
critical that the cost of gasoline across this country be brought under
control," she wrote.

In the letter Rell asks Bodman to explain why the price increases are
occurring and what the federal government is doing to minimize the effects on
businesses, local governments and consumers.

She also asks the Connecticut Congressional delegation in Washington to
consider investigating the "constant upward spiral in the cost of a gallon of
gas." The Connecticut Congressional delegation comprises seven officials,
including five representatives in the 435 member US House of Representatives,
and two senators in the 100-member US Senate.
