E.On plans new coal plant
London (Platts)--7Mar2006
E.On is planning to invest ?1.2 billion ($1.44 billion) in building a second
coal-fired power station at Maasvlakte near the Netherlands port of Rotterdam,
the company said in a statement on March 3.
The plant will meet 7% of the Netherlands' electricity demand when it comes on
line in 2012 and use the latest coal-fired boiler technology that will give
the plant an efficiency of 46% ? around 4% higher than the peak figure for
most coal stations.
Wulf Bernotat, E.On chief executive, said the new coal station would make an
important contribution to its expansion in the rapidly developing Netherlands
power market.
The company gained access to the end user market in the Netherlands last year
when it acquired the local power distributor NRE Energie.
E.On has an existing 1,100 MW coal plant at Maasvlakte, which is being
modernized, and the new station will also have a capacity of 1,100 MW. The
company said that Maasvlakte was chosen because of its vicinity to the
deep-water port of Rotterdam, a major hub for coal vessels. "The new power
station uses environmentally friendly technology of pulverized coal firing. It
increases efficiency by 4% to approximately 46%, a peak figure for coal-fired
power stations, simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 20%,"
the company said in its statement.
E.On has plans to build an additional coal-fired plant at Dattelin in west
Germany and a 450-MW coal station on the east coast of the UK that will
incorporate carbon capture and storage technology.
