EPA completes
amendments to new rules for diesel engines
March 27 --
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has
finalized minor amendments to new rules for diesel engines in passenger
cars and light trucks, making it easier for manufacturers to comply with
tougher emission standards during a transition period.
The two voluntary compliance options signed by EPA Administrator
Stephen Johnson March 21 would apply to nitrogen oxide requirements for
diesels during compliance testing at high altitudes and high speed and
acceleration conditions. The voluntary options also would remain in
place for only three model years -- 2007 through 2009.
Manufacturers exercising the options would need to meet more
stringent requirements in other aspects of the Tier 2 Vehicle and
Gasoline Sulfur emissions program. The result would be a neutral impact
on the environment, according to the EPA.
