Grocery chain to clean up spaces to highlight plastic-bag litter

March 20 --

Albertson´s Inc., a grocery store chain, will adopt more than 475 public spaces to help bring attention to plastic shopping bag litter.

Customers at more than 475 stores in California and Nevada are being asked to nominate locations, such as parks, playgrounds or beaches, that will be cleaned up as part of the company´s Earth Day celebration.

Winning locations will be announced at stores on April 10, and cleanup activities will take place between April 17 and April 30, the company said.

"Last year, Albertson´s recycled over 6,000 tons of plastic bags, wrap and film," said Pete Van Helden, president and CEO of the company´s California division. "Our company is doing its part to reduce plastic bag consumption and minimize the impact of plastic in the waste stream, and it is my hope that our Earth Day program will draw our shoppers´ attention to this important cause."

The California Coastal Commission will supply company employees with resources and materials for the cleanups.
