Local resources cover about 26% of German energy demand in
2005
Freiburg (Platts)--20Mar2006
National resources covered 26% of German energy demand in 2005, latest
information from the energy agency Arbeitsgemeinschaft Energiebilanzen showed.
Energy import dependence did not increase further, said the agency.
In 2005, German resources covered 129.7-mil metric tons of hard coal
equivalent, which is the same as in 2004. The most important local German
resources by far is brown coal, where 177.9-mil mt (54.8-mil mt of hard coal
equivalent) were recovered in 2005, equaling a share of 42% in total local
energy generation. Hard coal came second with 26-mil mt of hard coal
equivalent, a share of 20%.
About 20.4-mil mt of hard coal equivalent of natural gas were recovered,
making up a share of 15.7%. Oil came to 4%, hydro 2% and wind power 2.6%. But
the agency said that despite good generation in Germany, the country remained
dependent on imports. Germany imports about 97% of its oil demand, and about
80% of its gas demand. About 60% of hard coal demand is imported, while brown
coal is completely covered by local sources.
If nuclear power is considered a local resource because of Germany's
storage of nuclear fuels, then import dependency falls to 61% from the 74%
without consideration of nuclear power.
