Mass. nuclear power firm to pay $48,000 to settle hazardous waste case
 
March 23 -- Yankee Atomic Electric Co. will pay $48,750 to settle allegations that it violated federal hazardous waste laws.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cited the company for allegedly improperly disposing of steel coated with PCB-contaminated paint. The alleged violation occurred at the company´s decommissioned nuclear power plant in Rowe, Mass.

Yankee Atomic Electric allegedly failed to properly sample some 50,420 pounds of steel to ensure that PCB-contaminated paint was removed before a scrap recycler collected the material. The company recovered 33,360 pounds of the material.
