Minister: India to shake up Coal industry
London (Platts)--7Mar2006
India needs to increase production of indigenous coal in order to meet its
needs over the next 10 years, the Indian Minister of State for coal Dasari
Narayana Rao said Monday (March 6). Speaking in the keynote address to
delegates at the 5th Coaltrans India conference in New Delhi, Rao added the
Indian government has implemented a number of measures to encourage coal
production, including the introduction of legislation; the development of coal
blocks, with a particular emphasis on the private sector; and removing
barriers on foreign investment. "The public sector coal companies have so far
performed more than the targets given to them. But the growing needs of our
economy requires public/private participation in the coal sector and that is
what we intend to promote," Rao added.
