Minnesota lawmakers table 25% renewable sourcing by 2025 bill

Portland, Maine (Platts)--24Mar2006

Minnesota would join the growing ranks of states that have set renewable
energy mandates under a bill introduced late Thursday in the state House.

The bipartisan bill, House File 3883, would require utilities to have 25%
of their retail sales coming from renewable sources by 2025. The bill, with 11
cosponsors, allows utilities to include resources put into service after 1974
toward the mandate. The bill was referred to the Regulated Industries
Committee.

Currently, Minnesota has a renewable goal of 10% by 2015.

A similar bill was introduced in the Senate March 14. Senate File 1688
sets a 20% standard by 2020. The bill has five cosponsors and was sent to the
Senate Jobs, Energy and Community Development Committee.

Meanwhile, a third bill, House File 3793, was introduced Wednesday. It
raises the renewable goal to 25% by 2025.

Utilities that would be affected by the bills include Minnesota Power,
based in Duluth, Minnesota; Otter Tail Power, headquartered in Fergus Falls,
Minnesota; and Xcel Energy, which is based in Minneapolis.
