Pa. DEP fines
pipeline operator for gasoline leak
March 20 --
Pennsylvania has fined Buckeye Pipeline Co.
$150,000 for the release of nearly 50,000 gallons of gasoline and other
products from its terminal in Upper Milford Township, Pa.
The state Department of Environmental Protection is working with the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ensure the company´s cleanup of
the October 2005 release. The DEP has issued a consent order and
agreement with Buckeye Pipeline to submit a comprehensive site
characterization study.
"Imposing this penalty and issuing this order underlines our ongoing
concerns about Buckeye´s overall operations at this site," said Michael
Bedrin, DEP northeast regional director.
On Nov. 1, 2004, the company discovered that about 48,000 gallons of
unleaded gasoline had leaked from a crack in a sump at the bottom of a
1.68 million-gallon storage tank.
