Pa. coke manufacturer fined for emission violations

March 16 -- Erie Coke Corp. will pay a $51,000 fine and reduce smoke and dust emissions at its coke manufacturing facility under an agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Pollution from the company´s coke oven battery, which consists of 58 coke ovens, drew numerous complaints from residents. The state DEP investigated the complaints and found that dust samples contained up to 80 percent coke.

The company will pay the fine to the state´s Clean Air Fund, which supports projects to improve air quality.
