Paper recyclers aid hurricane victims

Many paper recyclers using Abitibi-Consolidated´s Paper Retriever program donated $27,000, representing proceeds from October and November, to the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Katrina victims.

"We are moved by the community´s overwhelming generosity to support hurricane victims," said Ben Walker, manager of marketing and public affairs for Abitibi-Consolidated.

Abitibi-Consolidated operates the Paper Retriever program in 23 metropolitan areas and has more than 16,000 green and yellow recycling bins where people can drop off their recycled paper.

Abitibi-Consolidated pays for the paper, and organizations hosting the bins had the option of donating October and November proceeds to the hurricane relief effort.

"We are pleased so many of our customers donated to such a worthy cause," said Michael Sullivan, general manager of Abitibi-Consolidated´s recycling division.
