Some 800 cm of oil spilt as a result of a pipeline rupture in Russia's
Republic of Bashkortostan, the information department of the Emergency
Situations Ministry told. The contaminated area is some 500 sq meters.
"The incident occurred on March 8, at the 1,224th km of the
Nizhnevartovsk-Kurgan-Kuibyshev oil pipeline near the village of Tuamazy, which
is 150 km west of Ufa," the Ministry specified.
According to emergency officials, no fire broke out after the spill. They
also claimed that the petroleum products never got into local water basins and
that the spill had been diked from the direction of the river Bishinda.
Oil cleanup works are underway; 140 cm of spilt oil have already been collected
and taken out for disposal, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.
More than 200 people are involved in the relief operation.
Oil transportation through the damaged segment has been suspended.
