Planet Organic
Markets Harnesses Wind Energy
Mar 8, 2006 - PR Newswire
VICTORIA, March 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - PLANET ORGANIC MARKETS (a
division of Planet Organic Health Corp (TSX-V, POH)), Canada's leading
natural and organic supermarket chain, has become a part of the growing
number of businesses harnessing wind power. In an effort to ramp up its
environmental efforts, the company has purchased wind power for all
their computers.
Planet Organic Markets has signed an agreement to buy electricity
from the Pembina Institute, a non-profit environmental organization
dedicated to sustainable energy solutions. The bulk purchase for 24-
Megawatt hours of wind energy is equivalent to 24 tonnes of CO2
emissions. This is equal to taking 20 average cars off the road for an
entire year!
"Planet Organic Market's commitment to health is impressive. Health
and the environment go hand in hand - you are what you eat, breathe and
drink. Planet Organic recognizes this and knows that clean, renewable
sources of energy have direct health benefits and are worth investing
in," said Tina Barzo, Wind Power Program Coordinator for the Pembina
Institute. "We make it possible for anyone to purchase wind power,
whether they want to start small or jump right in and go carbon
neutral!"
"We're committed to environment responsibility," says Diane Shaskin,
Vice-President of Planet Organic Markets. "Wind power is a perfect way
for many companies to reduce their impact on the earth."
Planet Organic's EcoKarma Committee, composed of company employees,
helped to source the Pembina Institute. "This was in keeping with our
effort to support the company's motto of 'Good Food, Good for You, Good
for the Earth,'" said Committee chair, Pat Tufts, manager of Planet's
Calgary store.
Planet Organic recently announced a partnership with the Sierra Club,
a non-profit environmental organization. In addition, Planet Organic
sponsors 15 children through the Foster Parents Plan.
