Rising fuel costs hitting waste industry hard, NSWMA reports

March 3

The solid waste industry is spending an additional $800 million per year due to higher fuel costs compared to 2004 prices, a new white paper from the National Solid Wastes Management Association reports.

Natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, as well as increased global crude oil demand have contributed to the increase, said Bruce Parker, president and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based NSWMA.

"One thing is certain: Prices for diesel and other commodities are not likely to decrease, so garbage companies must plan ahead and prepare their customers," he said.

Parker said the white paper was developed to explain how rising diesel and commodity prices are impacting the waste industry and its customers.
