UK Government pressed on waste measures
Tuesday 28 March 2006
Green group Friends of the Earth has urged the
Government to introduce a waste prevention target for municipal waste,
following the publication of figures that showed a 2.1% increase in the last
year. Currently, the national waste strategy review contains no plans for a
waste minimisation target.
"Tough new policies and targets are needed to cut the amount of waste thrown
away in England every year. Recycling targets have led to a substantial
increase in our recycling rates - why can't we do the same with waste
prevention?” commented Dr Anna Watson, Waste Campaigner at Friends of the
Earth. “Unless the Government acts to reduce the levels of waste produced by
companies and households the situation will only get worse."
Along with the waste prevention target, FoE is calling on the Government to
work with manufacturers and retailers to minimise waste from a production
level, and greatly improve the country’s recycling rate.
