SACRAMENTO, Mar 1, 2006 -- UPI

Waste Management Inc. announced Wednesday it has become the first solid waste company to track, report and certify its California greenhouse gas emissions.

The Houston-based company says it has joined the California Climate Action Registry, a non-profit partnership created in 2000 by the California legislature to help reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions.

California wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80 percent of 1990 levels by the year 2050.

Waste Management says it has been generating renewable energy, switching to natural gas trucks and investing in better recycling technologies for more than a decade.
