Washington becomes fourth state to adopt e-waste law

March 27 --

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire signed the nation´s fourth electronic waste bill March 24, making the state the first to require manufacturers to fully finance the collection and recycling of electronics.

The law creates the Washington Materials Management and Financing Authority, which is responsible for developing and implementing a statewide electronics collection and recycling program by Jan. 1, 2009.

Manufacturers can implement their own electronics collection and recycling program or pay to participate in the authority´s system. Either way, the program will be free for Washington residents, small businesses, schools, small local governments and charities.
