MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Xcel Energy is now ranked as the nation's largest buyer of wind energy.

The Minneapolis-based utility edged Southern California Edison in rankings from the American Wind Energy Association.

The group says it's the first time in the recent history of the wind energy industry in the United States that Southern California Edison has been overtaken as the largest purchaser of wind energy.

Xcel operates in Colorado, Texas and Minnesota.

The company was buying one-thousand-48 megawatts of wind energy at the end of 2005.

Southern California Edison came up with 21 megawatts less.
