BMW to use landfill
methane to power S.C. paint shop
May 8 --
Not every car that BMW Manufacturing Co. paints
will be the same color.
But the company is touting its paint shop in Spartanburg, S.C., as
being "green."
BMW will start using methane gas generated by the nearby Palmetto
landfill near Spartanburg to provide energy for the paint shop, the
company said.
"BMW is the first automotive paint shop to integrate the use of
landfill gas in its process equipment," said Dave Ciuffoletti, vice
president of sales.
A 9.5-mile pipeline was constructed from the Waste Management Inc.
landfill to the automotive plant in 2002 to provide some of the
manufacturing plantīs energy needs, the company said. Now the company
has upgraded and modified equipment to allow the use of landfill gas to
run the paint shop.
