Blair pressed on nuclear claimsFriday 19 May 2006Environmental NGO Friends of the Earth has demanded that Prime Minister Tony Blair reveal more details behind this week’s announcement that nuclear power was back on the UK’s agenda, to clarify the information submitted to the ‘first cut’ of the Energy Review. The group has filed a request through the Freedom of Information regulations to find out the briefing that led to the PM’s statements. Green campaigners and organisations broadly condemned the announcement, made on Tuesday, as it followed the publication of a number of reports that appeared to question the benefits of nuclear generation. The announcement also undermined the possibility of a large-scale renewable programme, despite various reports detailing its potential. "Tony Blair has completely undermined the Government's Energy Review by endorsing a new generation of nuclear power stations. He must publish details of the briefing he received from the DTI, which he has now made so public, so that we can have a transparent and open debate on this issue,” said Friends of the Earth director Tony Juniper. "Clean and safe technologies for tackling climate change and meeting our energy needs already exist. The UK should be leading the way in developing a sustainable energy strategy for the 21st century, rather than championing dirty, dangerous and expensive nuclear power," he added. |
