Bush administration still weighs lifting ethanol tariffs: Bodman

Washington (Platts)--4May2006

The Bush administration is continuing to weigh the elimination of tariffs
on imported ethanol, US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said Thursday.

"It is something the administration has considered and will continue to
consider," Bodman said at a press conference with the energy ministers of
Canada and Mexico.

However, Bodman suggested that a decision on the tariffs is really up to
Congress, which is juggling a variety of different interests on the matter.
Some US corn producers, for example, are concerned that cheaper ethanol from
Brazil could erode their market share.

The US has a 54 cents/gal tariff on Brazilian ethanol, largely produced
from sugar cane.
