CHRONOLOGY - Recent Pacific Rim Earthquakes
INTERNATIONAL: May 29, 2006


May 28 - An earthquake that devastated a wide area around Indonesia's ancient royal city of Yogyakarta on Saturday is now known to have killed more than 3,000 people.

 


Following is a list of some earthquakes which have hit the Pacific Rim region in recent years:

Dec 12, 1992 - INDONESIA - A quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale kills at least 2,200 on a string of islands in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

Sept 30, 1993 - INDIA - A series of quakes kills almost 10,000 in western and southern India. The first tremor measured 6.4.

June 6, 1994 - COLOMBIA - A quake brings down buildings, triggers mudslides and kills about 1,000 in the Paez River valley in south-western Colombia.

Jan 17, 1995 - JAPAN - A quake measuring 7.2, the country's worst in half a century, rocks Kobe, killing 6,430.

May 28, 1995 - RUSSIA - Russia's worst earthquake, measuring 7.5, kills 1,989 in the oil-producing Far East.

July 17, 1998 - PAPUA NEW GUINEA - An undersea quake measuring 7.1 creates three tsunamis which kill at least 2,100.

Jan 25, 1999 - COLOMBIA - A quake measuring 6.3 kills at least 1,170 in the central coffee-growing region.

Sept 21, 1999 - TAIWAN - At least 2,000 people are killed and hundreds of thousands made homeless by a quake measuring 7.6 in central Taiwan.

Jan 26, 2001 - INDIA - An earthquake measuring 7.7 hits the western state of Gujarat killing at least 19,700 and causing damage in neighbouring Pakistan. The quake affected 15.9 million people in 7,904 villages.

Dec 26, 2004 - Nearly 230,000 people are killed and 43,000 listed as missing in a 9.15 magnitude earthquake off Indonesia and a tsunami triggered by it in the Indian Ocean region.

March 28, 2005 - INDONESIA - Nearly 1,000 were believed killed after a quake of magnitude 8.7 struck the coast of Sumatra.
