Katrina inflicted $1.4 billion in damage on wastewater facilities

Hurricane Katrina has caused nearly $1.4 billion in damage to Gulf Coast wastewater treatment facilities, according to an international water-quality organization.

The Water Environment Federation released a report late last month outlining the September 2005 hurricane´s impact on 118 wastewater facilities in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that serve some 1.8 million people.

The group estimates that the cost to repair and rebuild wastewater facilities will be $1.2 billion. The wastewater utilities also have lost $163 million in revenue base, according to the report. Louisiana´s wastewater infrastructure was hardest hit, suffering just over $1 billion in damage.
