Ontario's energy minister says she doesn't expect power crisis this summer

TORONTO (The Associated Press) - May 11

(CP) _ Ontario's energy minister says she doesn't expect an electricity crisis this summer, but there are still major concerns about power supply going into next year.

Donna Cansfield says the Independent Electricity System Operator believes the province's energy needs will be met this summer because of recent additions to the power grid.

Cansfield has launched a new program with Toronto Hydro that will see consumers and businesses volunteer to have their air conditioning cut back during extreme peaks in usage.

Businesses can also volunteer to have their stand-alone generators used to supplement the grid when needed.

Still, officials offer no guarantees that an energy crisis is out of the question.

Cansfield says there are plans for rolling brownouts if needed, but she hopes they will be unnecessary.
