Precious metals complex sets volume record on CBOT

New York (Platts)--18May2006


Trading volume for the electronically traded precious metals complex on
the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) reached an all-time high of 102,237
contracts by the close of trading May 17, surpassing the previous record of
100,589 contracts set on May 11, the CBOT said Thursday. Also, for the second
time this week open interest set a record, with a total of 17,013,590
contracts on Wednesday, eclipsing the earlier record of 16,841,302 contracts
set on Monday.

The CBOT's gold futures complex set a volume record of 90,021 contracts
on May 17, exceeding the old record of 81,797 contracts set May 11, 2006.
Volume in the CBOT full-sized gold (100 oz) futures increased 11 percent,
climbing to 62,003 contracts, beating the previous record of 55,670 contracts
set on May 11.

Volume in the mini-sized gold (33 oz) futures rose 7% to a record 28,018
contracts, surpassing the previous record of 26,127 contracts set on May 11.
Month-to-date, the CBOT Gold futures complex accounted for nearly 40% of
listed Gold futures contracts traded in North America.

The CBOT's precious metals complex consists of a 100 oz gold futures
contract, a mini-sized (33 oz) Gold futures, full-sized gold options, a
full-sized (5,000 oz) silver futures contract and mini-sized (1,000 oz)
silver futures contracts.
