Radioactive water leaks from nuclear reactor in northern Japan

TOKYO (The Associated Press) - May 8

Water containing a small amount of radiation leaked from a nuclear reactor at a power plant in northern Japan but no workers were exposed, according to the plant's operator.

About 45 liters (11.7 gallons) of radioactive water was found leaking from a pump at the unit 3 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant Sunday, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said in a statement Monday.

The reactor had been shut down for regular inspections and no radiation escaped outside, the company said.

No workers were exposed, company official Akio Midorikawa said.

Fukushima is 239 kilometers (149 miles) northeast of Tokyo.
