New Zealand power users have been urged to support Transpower's bid to build a new 430-pylon transmission line. Keith Turner, the CEO of Meridian Energy, says the line is needed to ensure that Auckland's electricity suppliers remain viable. An interim verdict on whether the new line should proceed is expected to be made by the Electricity Commission by the end of April 2006. Turner says that if the transmission line is built, New Zealand can continue to rely on renewable energy in preference to coal or natural gas for some years to come for its electricity supplies.
