UK survey finds 85% of public in favor of renewables
London (Platts)--24May2006
A survey by market research company NOP, commissioned by the UK's
Department of Trade and Industry, has found that 85% of the UK public support
the use of renewable energy, 81% are in favor of wind power and just over
three-fifths would be happy to live within 5 kilometers of a wind power plant,
Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said Wednesday.
Speaking at the All Energy conference in Aberdeen, Wicks said that the
survey results, published Wednesday, contrasted with "all the hot air and
skepticism from certain quarters." He said that to reach the government's
target of 10% of renewables by 2010, the UK would need more schemes such as
the Whitelee wind farm which was recently given the green light by the
Scottish Executive.
"But it's not just large scale renewable energy projects that we want to
encourage," added Wicks, "but also more localized generation, such as micro
wind turbines, solar panels and combined heat and power biomass boilers."
