Canada’s revenue from renewables jumps 20% in two years

OTTAWA, Ontario, CA, August 30, 2006 (Refocus Weekly)

Canada realized annual revenue from renewable energy technologies of Cdn$169 million in 2004, an increase of 19.7% over 2002, with construction of renewable energy facilities increasing 681% over the two years.

Technologies used to produce solar and wind energy, combined with technologies used in energy conservation, accounted for two-thirds of total revenues from sales of technologies and services in 2004 that reduce GHG emissions, according to the Environment Industry Survey from the national data agency, Statistics Canada. In total, Canadian companies earned $737.3 million from the sale of such technologies and services in 2004, up 16.6% from $632.3 million in 2002.

Technologies to provide solar and wind energy accounted for 23% of that total, while technologies to conserve energy and improve efficiency accounted for 43%. Provision of services to reduce GHG emissions contributed $104.1 million in revenues, with installation, maintenance and consulting in both renewables and efficiency representing most of that revenue. Construction of renewable energy production facilities generated revenue of $17.2 million in 2004, compared with $2.2 million in 2002, while other renewable energy production was $6.9 million, up 22.4% from $5.6 million in 2002.

Cogeneration, methane capture, waste-to-energy conversion had 2004 revenues of $223.3 million, up 171% from $8.6 million in 2002, while revenue from the sale of fuel cells and alternative fuel technologies amounted to $95.2 million, down 19.1% from 2002.

Technologies covered in the survey have an impact on cutting GHG emissions and include systems which optimize energy use in manufacturing processes, the report explains. “Technologies that result in energy savings contribute to reduced GHG emissions, even though the use of these technologies may be driven by economic rather than environmental considerations.”

While solar, wind and small hydro rose 19.7% to $169 million, energy conservation and efficiency rose 32% to $318 million. All services for reducing GHG emissions rose 1.1% to $104 million in 2004, resulting in a sector total of $737.3 million, up 16.6% from the 2002 total of $632.3 million.
