Federal farm bill wins support from environmental group

Sept. 15 --

A proposed federal agricultural bill is being praised by environmentalists for its support of renewable energy development on farms, ranches and forest lands.

The Healthy Farms, Food and Fuels Act of 2006 would increase loan guarantees for renewable energy on farms from $200 million to $2 billion annually, according to the group Environmental Defense.

"The next farm bill should provide economic and environmental incentives for all farmers, ranchers and small private forest owners and should address our nationīs energy, health and environmental needs for the 21st century," said Rep. Ron Kind, D-Wis., sponsor of the bill.
