14 groups urge federal government to increase environmental funding

Feb. 2

Fourteen environmental groups are calling on President Bush and Congress to adequately fund environmental and health programs.

The groups released their funding blueprint, "A Green Budget for a Healthy America," in anticipation of the administrationīs fiscal 2007 budget request, which should come out next week.

"The core safeguards protecting our health and our communities have been cut to the bone in recent years, and we canīt afford to keep slashing away," said Heather Taylor, deputy legislative director for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The green budget, which is online at www.saveourenvironment.org, addresses $1.3 billion in funding cuts to health and environmental initiatives over the last several years. The figure is adjusted for inflation.
