Bush green vows are ‘unclear’

Environmental group Friends of the Earth has
responded to this week’s State of the Union address from President Bush by
claiming that the green initiatives outlined are unclear, and that the
Administration lacks the ‘political will’ to follow up the statements with
action.
In the speech, delivered earlier this week, the President called for a move
away from US dependence on Middle Eastern oil imports – with a reduction of
75% by 2025, and increased efforts to develop mass market ethanol-fuelled
vehicles within six years.
"The President was right to highlight his country's addiction to oil: its
one of the main reasons why the US is the world's biggest polluter of
climate-changing gases. Unfortunately his administration refuses to join the
rest of the world in tackling the problem, and he ignored it again in his
speech,” commented Friends of the Earth International's climate campaigner
Catherine Pearce.
"The United States could reduce its dependence on oil and cut emissions by
tackling energy waste and investing in renewables and cleaner technology.
But it's unclear whether President Bush has actually offered anything new,
and his record to date casts doubt on whether he has the political will to
act.”
