Maine plant switches
to all green power
Feb. 10The nationīs largest natural
personal-care product maker has moved to 100 percent renewable energy at
its manufacturing facility.
Tomīs of Maine will use wind energy generated at the Ains-worth Wind
Energy Facility in Nebraska to power its 100,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing
facility in Sanford, Maine. The company is buying 130,000 kilowatt-hours
of electricity per month, or about 1,150 megawatts per year, of
renewable energy certificates from the wind farm.
The purchase will offset more than 1.5 million pounds of carbon
dioxide emissions this year, said Tom Chappell, CEO and co-founder. The
company, founded in 1970, produces personal care items, such as
toothpaste, deodorant and soap, which do not contain preservatives or
artificial colors, flavors or animal ingredients.
