Pa. revokes sewage processing company´s permit

Feb. 8

Krystal Point Ventures Inc. has had its waste processing permit yanked due to ongoing problems at its Young Township, Pa., sewage waste disposal facility.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection revoked the company´s permit, closing down the facility. Krystal Point Venture began operating the site in October 2004, accepting sewage sludge generated primarily in New York until March 2005.

A lack of markets for the product manufactured from the recycled sludge led to waste storage and disposal problems, according to the DEP. The agency is pursuing action against Krystal Point Ventures to clean up about 5,000 tons of sludge left behind at the site. The company has abandoned the facility and creditors seized some of the equipment from the site, according to the DEP.

The company also faces fines for violating state regulations.
