Renewables have “everything to play for” - Wicks

Friday 10 February 2006

LONDON
Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks has reiterated the Government’s support for renewable technologies, saying that the green energy sources ‘have nothing to fear’ from the Energy Review. Speaking at the BWEA Wave and Tidal Conference in Gateshead yesterday, the Minister described the climate change issue as a defining reason for the ongoing backing of clean power technologies.

Recent speculation over the review has centred on a possible large-scale return to nuclear energy, in a bid to achieve lower carbon levels. This has raised concern among environmentalists who argue against the dangerous waste and potential security issues of nuclear.

"Growing evidence of climate change and questions around the reliability of global energy sources guarantees its place at the table. The 2010 target remains. The 2020 aspiration remains. By that time I am confident that our children will be learning about the reality, not the promise, of bulk generation from renewables,” commented Mr. Wicks, at the Sage event.

"I'm aware of course that nuclear dominates the headlines, and there's a lot of lobbying from that direction. But this is my Energy Review, I am in no doubt that our future lies in a healthy mix of energy sources. This isn't about nuclear versus renewables, my eyes and ears are open to evidence on all technologies. I may be nuclear neutral but I am not renewables neutral. This sector needs to carry on engaging constructively and realistically during this consultation phase of the Review. There is everything to play for."
